One such oilfield is located within the Barnet Shale. This geological formation lies within the Bend Arch-Fort Worth Basin, located mostly in north central Texas and parts of Oklahoma. While experts believe this holds the largest reservoir of natural gas in the United States, its geological features make it almost impossible to extract. Recent developments in the process of hydraulic fracturing have made it possible to begin harvesting these reserves.
Another rich geological formation is the Cline Shale, east of Midland on the southwest third of the pan handle. It is also sometimes called Wolfberry or Wolfcamp. It is one of the most fervid fields on the entire North American Continent. Cline Shale is another field that relies on hydraulic fracturing, also known as "fracking, " to access the rich reserves of natural gas.
The Eagle Ford formation underlies a large chunk of the southern half of the state. It is one of the most aggressively drilled sites for both gas and oil in the United States. Eagle Ford is comprised of Late Cretaceous sedimentary rock and contains mainly marine shale fossils.
Another formation, called the East Texas, underlies 140,000 acres reaching into five counties in the eastern part of the state. Apart from Alaska, this is the second largest oilfields in the country. There are over 30,000 wells here, some of which are historically significant. This field covers an area 45 miles by 5 miles. The five other oilfields in the state are Powell, Goose Creek, Spraberry Trend, Spindletop and Yates.
Among the most common reasons behind workplace fatalities in the oil E&P industries are falls, vehicle accidents, getting stuck in between pieces of machinery, confined spaces, chemical exposure, explosions and fires. The people involved in an oilfield project are its most valuable asset. Keeping them safe should be the paramount objective.
The term "roughneck" is applied generally to an individual whose occupation is hard manual labor, typically in an extremely hazardous environment.
